Welcome to the Amazon! Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, capital of Madre de Dios, and join a 1-hour bus and 1-hour boat journey till the lodge. Your first taste of the Amazon culinary will be in the river while you let the city behind to enjoy the amazing jungle landscapes. Refugio Amazonas awaits – a spacious ecolodge, with bar, a massage center, and buffet service with the Tambopata National Reserve behind it. This eco-lodge is home of Wired Amazon, the first citizen science project which turns explorers into a citizen scientist.
Accommodation includes a 45-meter square room with mosquito nets, a private bathroom and an open wall facing the forest. Your stay includes three meals daily, teas, coffee, guided excursions and activities, refreshments upon arriving, and transfers to and from the airport. We assign guides at 10:1
A thirty-minute walk from the lodge leads to the 34-meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws, and raptors are likely.
The light glares against the sheet, highlighting its white color against the dark jungle night. As the bright light flickers, moths begin to flutter towards it. You study them carefully, noting their shapes and patterns. By the end of the night, you might have discovered a new species unknown to science. Now, you get to name it yourself!

You might paddle around Condenado oxbow lake on a canoe, looking for lake side wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman and horned screamers, hoping to see the otters which are infrequently seen here. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws.
Meet the charismatic Don Manuel from the neighboring community of Condenado. Just five minutes downriver from the lodge he grows organically a variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. On this fruit-farm excursion, every plant and tree you see serves a purpose.
Along the Ethnobotanical trail, you will find a variety of plants and trees that are used by the local population with at least the same variety of purposes. Learn about the medicinal (and other) uses of Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among several others.

After a boat ride along the calm Tambopata River and a trek through the thick jungle, you’ve arrived at the secluded bluff. Hidden behind a blind, you watch and wait for the Parrot family’s smallest members. As the sun rises higher in the sky, tiny flecks of green and yellow and blue rush towards the bluff in swarms. Here at the Parakeet Clay Lick, this fascinating spectacle happens daily!
A few minutes hike from the lodge is a beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested for decades (if not centuries) where the precarious remains of a camp used two months a year by Brazil Nut gatherers can still be experienced. We will be demonstrating the whole process of the rain forest’s only sustainably harvested product from collection through transportation to drying.
Nightly lectures prepared by the scientific researchers from Wired Amazon cover conservation threats, opportunities, and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.

As you navigate your bike along a narrow trail, you finally emerge from the forest, blinking at the unfamiliar sunlight. The view nearly takes your breath away. You’re perched on an Amazon overlook, high above the majestic Tambopata River. This view alone was worth the trip. But more than that, your Mountain Biking ride has been jam-packed with excitement, with new discoveries at every twist of the trail.
The rainforest is dense and silent, but you know that mammals are hiding all around the area. An incredible creature — a Giant Anteater, or maybe even a whole herd of jungle pigs — might’ve been here just a few hours ago. Back at the lodge, you’ll find out what amazing wildlife has paid the camera traps a visit. This is the AmazonCam Tambopata: a unique way for science-lovers to learn about modern science and explore the jungle
You will have the option of a jungle night walk when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
